Sharon Gannon was born on July 4, 1951, in the city of Washington D.C, U.S. She is a yoga teacher, musician, dancer, author, choreographer, and animal rights advocate. She is one of the most famous Jivamukti teachers and practitioners

Sharon started studying dance at the University of Washington.


She also started learning meditation and yoga in 1969. She met David Life in 1982 with whom she started teaching yoga in 1984. She along with David pursued Yoga in India in 1986 and founded Jivamukti, a Yoga center in New York after their return from India. In 1990, they both studied Ashtanga Vinsaya Yoga in Mysore. Music, art, and dance caught Sharon’s interest in the late 1970s. She co-founded the band named “Audio Letter” with a musician, Sue Ann Harkey. Moreover, she was also part of a group that founded the “Salon Apocalypse” performance art salon.


Earth has literally trillions of people, but literally only a handful of people working to protect our planet. Why is that? Well, first of all, there is no money in it. Secondly, there is no single good environmentalist hero (like Superman) to inspire the masses. And, lastly, there still is not enough support for environmental organizations.


Sharon has changed the perception of people in terms of life, spirituality, animals, and the environment. She is the one who created the Jivamukti Yoga Method, a track to wisdom and enlightenment through compassion for all beings. Sharon believed her teachers (Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, Shyamdas, Swami Nirmalananda, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and Shri Milan Goswami) played a major role in her learning of yoga and she is now a pioneer in teaching yoga. One major part of Jivamukti yoga includes veganism.


Today, the Jivamukti method is one of the most recognizable and admirable yoga methods in the world. Even Yoga Journal magazine has called Sharon an innovator. Sharon has authorized and compiled numerous DVDs related to Yoga and people really admire her for this too. She is the beneficiary of the 2008 Compassionate Living Award and the 2013 PETA Compassionate Action Award. Compassion is a way of thinking that is embodied in our actions, that is deeper than words, that is more powerful than reason, that is available to all of us at any time, that is present in our hearts, that is more powerful than everything else. Compassion is the essence of our humanity, of our dignity, of our worth, of our presence in the world.

Animal Rights

Sharon is a perfect example of an animal rights advocate; she has always been a lifelong and honest advocate who fought for animals rights. In 1999, she helped in building Animal Mukti Free Spray and Neuter Clinic in New York City. This helped in reducing the unwanted pets in the city.

In 2004, she was called and recognized as “Friend of Ferals” by the Humane Society of New York and Neighborhood Cats along with David Life. Sharon and David were awarded life the 2008 Compassionate Living Award by the Farm Sanctuary. She has collaborated and worked with PETA on various projects and campaigns as a “vanguard member”. Sharon was also nominated for the “Gutsiest Woman of the Year 1999” by Jane Magazine and awarded the Compassionate Living Award by Farm Sanctuary in 2008.

As Sharon’s interest was increasing in yoga, she presented at the national level in 1993. Apart from this, she organized a conference known as “Jivamukti Tribe Gathering”.

In yoga, we call teachers gurus and practices sadhana (or sādhana). There are many types of yoga and sadhana (practice) and they can be different from each other in many ways. Some of them require that we train, while others we can practice with no training. The effect of this difference in practice varies from one person to another. This is why it is important to know which practice is the right one for you and what to make of it.

The conference called many advanced teachers of yoga. Sharon now teaches a course of one month of Jivamukti Yoga every year in the U.S at the Omega Institute, New York, in Europe, and in Central America. Her partner David also supports her in this training course. Sharon’s yoga is now so popular that it is taught worldwide in different schools and centers. Her famous students include Madonna, Uma Thurman, Sting, and Russell Simmons.

Music in Sharon’s Life:

Sharon also had a major interest in music. She has performed on vocals and violin with various music bands. She also issued her album named “Sharanam”. . Dancing and choreography also caught her attention. She danced, directed dance plays, and choreographed for her dance company “Moon-Food” in the 1980s. She also performed in the 2007 Asana: Sacred Dance of the Yogis, along with her partner David.

Sharon has been featured in a number of shows in the United States. Morning shows are one of the most important things on TV in the United States. These shows are the first thing millions of people see when they wake up, inspiring some to get an early start on their day while others are more likely to stay in bed. The shows are also a forum for spiritual leaders to promote their ideas to millions of people each morning.

Besides shows, she appeared in many interviews and numerous articles and journals were written related to her. Vanity Fair praises Sharon and thanks to her for making yoga cool and hip. Time Magazine was too impressed by Sharon’s yoga program and they declared Jivamukti yoga as one of the significant forms of hatha yoga taught in the world today. Throughout her life, she traveled extensively to different parts of the world and taught yoga in different conferences such as American, Canadian, Asian, and European conferences.

Sharon wrote several books that were considered the best-selling books worldwide. Her ideas and concepts in the books were mostly inspired by ‘Veganism’. She believed veganism was a vital part of spiritual justice. Simple Recipes for Joy contains more than 200 delicious vegan recipes. The bestselling Yoga and Vegetarianism were revised in 2020 and published as Yoga and Veganism, a groundbreaking work that cleverly and convincingly demonstrates how these five guiding yogic principles, are tied to an ethical vegan lifestyle. Food & Travel:

Food is one of the most important things in our lives because it connects us to our everyday experiences. We spend our days searching for food because it provides the vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, water, and other substances that our bodies need to grow, perform functions and maintain health.

Veganism is a way of life that eliminates the consumption of animal products. It is a philosophy that is based on compassion for all living beings, not just for human beings. Animals are sentient beings, so it’s only natural to feel compassion for them.


Animals are not just food items..they are living beings who feel pain when they are killed, who feel joy when they are happy, who feel love when they are loved. Vegetarianism is an extension of the vegan philosophy. It also requires that you eliminate the consumption of animal products.

Sharon traveled to India in 1986 with David, There they met their first teacher, Swami Nirmalananda. After that, they went on few more trips and met Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in New York and Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati.


Their teachers were very knowledgeable and guided them about individual spiritual paths in detail. Basically, it was their teachers’ teachings that helped Sharon in shaping and introducing Jivamukti yoga. For many years, Sharon and David were associated with their teachers and received many blessings from them. Sharon and David believed that their blessings were one of the main reasons for making the Jivamukti yoga method successful. Apart from these few mentioned names, Sharon studied from a number of prominent and skilled yoga teachers.

It is true that the world needs more people working to protect the environment, but its not because there are not enough environmental activists. The answer lies in the other way around: the world needs more people working for the environment.
